Kolkata, Aug. 16 -- Veteran Bengali filmmaker Raja Sen, known for the acclaimed film "Damu", died at Kolkata's SSKM Hospital on Sunday morning at the age of 71.
Sen had been critically ill for several days and was admitted to SSKM, where he was receiving treatment for multiple health complications. He was on ventilator support, but his health continued to decline as complications affected his lungs, heart and kidneys.
His feature-film career began with "Damu" in 1996. Centred on the unlikely friendship between a child and an elephant, the film won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film and brought Sen widespread recognition in Bengali cinema.
