Midnapore, Sept. 18 -- The Nandigram bypoll was plunged into fresh turmoil on Friday after Sanchita Pradhan Dey, the candidate of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool faction, withdrew her nomination hours after meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna.

The abrupt withdrawal, a day before the deadline for withdrawing nominations, leaves the Mamata faction without a candidate in the October 6 Nandigram contest and has triggered fresh questions over the rapidly changing political equations in the constituency.

Pradhan Dey, a teacher, met Adhikari at the state secretariat on Friday afternoon, accompanied by her husband Satyajit, sources said. She subsequently withdrew her nomination in Haldia. There was no immediate public...
