New Delhi, Sept. 15 -- Nairobi will make history in 2029 by becoming the first African city to host the World Athletics Championships, with Munich awarded the 2031 edition, World Athletics has announced.

The decision was taken at the 242nd World Athletics Council Meeting in Budapest, with Nairobi beating Rome, Munich and London for the 2029 event. Munich will host the championships two years later at its Olympic Stadium.

"We were fortunate to have four outstanding bids for 2029 and 2031, and this was not an easy decision for the Council," said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe. "The quality, ambition and commitment demonstrated by all four candidates underline the strength and global appeal of the World Athletics Championships.
