Mumbai, July 3 -- The Maharashtra government on Friday said shelters for stray dogs in Mumbai will become operational within six months at Malad, Mulund and Chembur following concerns raised in the Legislative Assembly over the rising incidents of dog bites.
Replying to a starred question, Industries Minister Uday Samant informed the House that the Revenue Department has been asked to allocate the three proposed sites for the shelters.The shelters would be constructed in accordance with Supreme Court guidelines. While acknowledging concerns raised by animal rights advocates, he appealed to them to behave responsibly and said public safety was paramount.
He noted there are 14.8 lakh stray dogs in Maharashtra, of which 94,000 are in Mumbai....
