Mumbai, July 30 -- A Mumbai citizens' group said on Thursday it would hold a peaceful "Namak Satyagraha" on Aug. 9 to demand protection of 256 acres of Mumbai's salt pan land between Mulund and Kanjurmarg and to protest its proposed development, arguing that the area plays a vital role in flood mitigation and ecological protection.
Ekta - The Power of Youth and Unity, which is organizing the protest, said the demonstration would coincide with Kranti Diwas, which marks the launch of India's Quit India Movement in 1942.
The group's founder-president, Rakesh Shankar Shetty, called on residents to assemble at 11 am near Mulund East Highway for the protest, saying the campaign sought to protect the salt pans citing ecological and flood-resilie...
