Mumbai, Aug. 8 -- Mumbai Police's Cyber Cell has recovered Rs 1.83 crore, nearly 92 per cent of the amount lost by a private company's senior executive in a WhatsApp impersonation fraud, officials said.

The fraud was reported on August 6 when the General Manager (Accounts) of a private firm received messages from a WhatsApp account carrying the name and photograph of the company's director.

The fraudster claimed to be using a new mobile number and asked the executive to urgently transfer Rs 1.98 crore for company-related work. Believing the message to be genuine, the executive transferred the amount.

The fraud came to light only after the executive contacted the director on his original phone number and verified the transaction.
