Mumbai, July 22 -- Auxiliary Bishop Savio Fernandes, one of the senior leaders of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bombay, has described the police action during the student protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi as excessive and a "black day" for democracy.

In a statement on Wednesday, he also called for an independent, impartial and transparent inquiry into the entire episode to determine whether any individuals or groups had deliberately attempted to disrupt the protest or provoke the demonstrators during the agitation.

He said that if any person's involvement in violence or provocation was established, action should be taken strictly in accordance with law, as the rule of law must apply equally to everyone.
