Kolkata, April 12 -- Blending politics with Bengal's deep-rooted football passion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress from a rally in Kushmandi, South Dinajpur, ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026.
Invoking recent controversies involving football, Modi alleged that the sport had fallen prey to "syndicate raj" under the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
"Today, even football has been handed over to syndicates by the Trinamool," he said.
Referring to the chaotic scenes during Argentine star Lionel Messi's recent visit to Kolkata, the Prime Minister said the entire country had witnessed the disorder at the Salt Lake Stadium.
