Kolkata, Feb. 23 -- In a unique move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written an open letter to the people of the state, sharply criticising the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on issues ranging from fake voters and illegal infiltration to unemployment and women's safety.

The letter, addressed to "My dear people of West Bengal" and opening with the salutation "Jai Maa Kali," is being distributed among voters as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's door-to-door outreach campaign, which began in early February.

Party sources said that ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections, the letter forms a key component of the BJP's election outreach ahead of the polls.
