Aizawl, July 29 -- The Mizoram government on Wednesday launched a statewide campaign to promote sunflower cultivation as an alternative cash crop, assuring farmers that their produce will be procured at a fixed price under the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO).

Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare Minister P.C. Vanlalruata flagged off the distribution of sunflower seeds to all 10 districts at the Directorate of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, marking the start of large-scale sunflower cultivation during the late Kharif season.

Calling on farmers to diversify beyond traditional crops, the minister said sunflower has the potential to increase farm incomes while reducing India's dependence on imported edible oils.
