Aizawl, Feb. 10 -- In a significant relief measure for livestock farmers hit hard by recurring disease outbreaks, Mizoram Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister C. Lalsawivunga on Tuesday announced that the state government has declared the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak a state-specific disaster, paving the way for compensation to affected pig farmers.

The Minister made the announcement while formally unveiling the Animal Insurance Scheme for the first time in Mizoram. The scheme was launched with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Insurance Company Ltd. and Lalsangliana, Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, in the Minister's presence.
