Aizawl, March 8 -- Authorities in south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district have detected 1,280 previously unreported Myanmar refugees during an ongoing biometric enrolment exercise, significantly increasing the official count of displaced persons taking shelter in the district.
Officials of the state Home Department said the number of Myanmar refugees recorded in Lawngtlai district stood at 5,034 as of March 6. However, following the discovery of the unaccounted refugees, the figure rose sharply to 6,314 by Friday.
Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga said over phone from Lawngtlai that the discrepancy came to light while district officials were conducting biometric enrolment of refugees from Myanmar.
