Chennai, July 11 -- Mellifluous singer and hailed as Nightingale of South India, veteran playback singer S.Janaki passed away at Mysore in Karnataka due to old age on Saturday night marking an end of an era in Indian music.

She was 88. The Legendary playback singer had sung close to 48,000 songs in various languages.

A voice that sounds incredibly sweet, smooth, and musical. It is a voice that is a joy to listen, Janaki has rejected the Padma Bhushan award in 2013 because the recognition came too late in her career.
