Shillong, June 19 -- The Meghalaya State Zoo has achieved a significant conservation milestone with the birth of a Stump-tailed Macaque (Macaca arctoides), marking the first successful breeding of the species at the zoo, a wildlife official announced on Friday.

The breeding pair was brought from Aizawl Zoological Park, Mizoram, under an animal exchange programme.

Meghalaya Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife & Biodiversity) and Chief Wildlife Warden, D. Sathiyan said the successful birth highlights the species' adaptation to its new environment and reflects the quality of animal care, veterinary support, and scientific management at the zoo.
