Shillong, June 26 -- Meghalaya's unique matrilineal system, where women play a central role as custodians of land and agriculture, and provide for familial lineage, could offer important lessons for global agricultural policy, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma stated on Friday.
Addressing a two-day international conference on Women Farmers and Sustainable Organic Agriculture, Sangma said, "Ownership creates responsibility and sustainability, and in Meghalaya, women have always been at the heart of agriculture and grassroots movement.""Our matrilineal society has empowered generations of women as custodians of land, making them key drivers of sustainable farming," he stated.
