Shillong, Oct. 11 -- Meghalaya has moved a step closer to reviving small-scale coal mining, with a technical team of the union Ministry of Coal inspecting coal-bearing areas in East Jaintia Hills and Khasi Hills last week, an official said on Sunday.
The team included officials of the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL), Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) and Meghalaya Directorate of Mineral Resources.
The visit follows the ongoing discussions between the State government and the union government to find ways and means to operationalise small-scale coal mining in Meghalaya, which has remained suspended since the ban imposed by the National Green Tribunal.
