Shillong, March 21 -- Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma on Saturday urged Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar to order an independent investigation into the law and order situation in the Garo Hills region.
In a memorandum submitted to the governor, Sangma said that tensions escalated in the run-up to elections in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) due to unresolved demand of the Garo tribe to bar non-tribals from contesting.
"The development that unfolded thereafter led to widespread unrest and conflict among different groups in the region. The situation escalated into violence, resulting in the unfortunate loss of two valuable human lives due to clashes between rival groups," the Trinamool Congress legislator said, refer...
