Shillong, May 8 -- The Meghalaya government on Friday constituted a one-man inquiry commission to probe the recent violence and social unrest that erupted in Garo Hills following the filing of nomination papers for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) election on March 9.

Former Chief Justice of Tripura High Court Tinilangthang Vaiphei has been appointed as Chairman of the Commission.

According to an order issued by the Home Department, the State government considers it necessary to institute an inquiry into the social unrest and subsequent violence in Garo Hills under the provisions of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952, in view of the social disturbances, subsequent loss of human lives, and damage to property arising out ...
