Shillong, Feb. 16 -- Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday informed the assembly that a total of 33 people died following a deadly explosion at an illegal coal mining site in the Mynsngat-Thangsko area of East Jaintia Hills district.
Making a suo-motu statement in the House, the Chief Minister announced a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the incident and its wider implications.
He said an enforcement team has been constituted, raids and seizures intensified, and additional police personnel and drones deployed across the East Jaintia Hills district to curb unlawful operations.
