Shillong, June 9 -- National People's Party (NPP) leader and ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance-2.0 candidate James Sangma is set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya after he emerged as the lone candidate to file nomination papers for the June 18 election.
Scrutiny of nomination papers for the state's lone Rajya Sabha seat was conducted Tuesday at the Assembly Secretariat.
Returning Officer and Assembly Secretary Malthus S Sangma found James' papers "completely in order and accepted them", officials said.
James, a former home minister of Meghalaya and elder brother of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, had filed his nomination papers on Monday 8 to contest the elections for the Upper House in Parliament.
