Nagpur, July 19 -- : Eminent public health expert and Padma Shri awardee Dr Abhay Bang on Sunday said that medical expenses have emerged as one of the biggest causes of poverty in India, with nearly five crore people being pushed into poverty every year due to rising healthcare costs.
Although research and advancements in medical science and technology have made effective treatment for serious diseases possible, the soaring cost of healthcare has emerged as a major challenge for ordinary families.
Speaking at a public programme in Nagpur, Dr Bang , who is founder of SEARCH , said illness not only affects a person's health but also devastates the financial stability of families, particularly those from economically weaker sections.
