Los Angeles, Sept. 6 -- Mark Volman, the effervescent co-founder of the 1960s pop-rock ensemble The Turtles and later one half of the irreverent duo Flo & Eddie, has died aged 78 after a sudden illness, his representatives and confirmed.

"Always funny, always upbeat, and a spirited and inventive performer, we will miss him greatly," Volman's attorney Evan Cohen wrote on Facebook Friday.

Born in Los Angeles in 1947, Volman helped form The Turtles alongside Howard Kalyan, Al Nichol, Jim Tucker, Chuck Portz and Don Murray. The group first broke through in 1965 with their shimmering rendition of Bob Dylan's 'It Ain't Me Babe', which remained on the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks.
