Sydney, Oct. 23 -- A man has been hospitalised with serious injuries after being stabbed on a bus in Sydney's inner-west suburbs in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) said in a statement that emergency services were called to reports of a stabbing in the inner-west suburb of Marrickville just before 1 a.m. local time on Thursday.

Officers arrived and were told that a 51-year-old male bus passenger had been stabbed in the hand and arm by another man, who subsequently exited the bus and left the scene.

The victim was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
