Mumbai, May 18 -- The Election Commission has announced the schedule for elections to 17 Local Authorities' constituencies of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, ending a prolonged delay of nearly two-and-a-half years caused by pending local body elections in the state. The polls, which are expected to boost the effective strength of the Upper House ahead of the Monsoon Session, will be held on June 18, while the counting of votes is scheduled for June 22.

Among the 17 seats, elections for 16 constituencies will be held as part of the regular cycle, while a by-election has been declared for the Nagpur Local Authorities' seat earlier represented by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
