Mumbai, May 26 -- The Maharashtra Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a massive, stringent crackdown across the state, including Mumbai and its satellite cities, to strictly enforce the mandate requiring all auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers to speak and understand the Marathi language.
The enforcement drive comes strictly on the heels of a massive political and social storm over the government's warning that non-compliance could lead to the direct cancellation of driving and permit licenses.
