Mumbai/Nagpur, June 22 -- The ruling Mahayuti alliance registered a sweeping victory in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, winning 16 of the 17 seats for which results were declared on Monday, while the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) failed to secure a single seat.

The elections for 17 constituencies were held on June 18. The Mahayuti had already gained an advantage after six of its candidates were elected unopposed before polling.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the biggest gainer, winning 11 seats. The Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde secured three seats, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar won two seats.
