Mumbai, Sept. 9 -- In a major crackdown aimed at curbing security risks and streamlining ride-hailing services, the Maharashtra government has rolled out a strict new aggregator policy mandating proficiency in Marathi, mandatory 15-year state residency certificates, and rigorous police background checks for all drivers operating on such ride-booking platforms.

Announcing the comprehensive framework following high-level stakeholder meetings with major transport operators-including Sahakar Taxi, Devdutt Taxi, Cityflo, Rapido, Ola, Uber, and Shalini Cabs-Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stated that the amendments, enacted under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules on August 12, 2026, are designed to plug severe safety loopholes.
