Amravati/Mumbai, Sept. 9 -- The Maharashtra government has ordered strict action against officials and agencies found responsible for the fire at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of the District Women's Hospital in Amravati that claimed the lives of three infants on August 24, following the submission of a high-level inquiry committee report.

The Public Health Department said the inquiry found serious lapses, including failure to carry out timely maintenance and repairs of ventilators, non-functional fire alarm and sprinkler systems, a locked fire pump house and major deficiencies in the maintenance and technical inspection of equipment.

Thirty-six newborns were evacuated and shifted to other hospitals after the incident.
