Mumbai, Oct. 2 -- At least seven people were killed and 18 others injured in a horrific road accident involving a truck and a pickup van on the Samruddhi Mahamarg in Maharashtra's Amravati district in the early hours of Friday, police said.

The accident occurred around 3.30 am near chainage number 97, close to Amravati-Dhamangaon Railway, when a Bolero pickup van carrying a Durga idol from Shegaon to Wardha collided head-on with a truck.

According to preliminary information, the collision was so severe that seven occupants of the pickup van died on the spot, while 18 others sustained serious injuries. The impact left the occupants trapped and triggered an emergency rescue operation.
