Mumbai, May 23 -- Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has announced that auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in the state would be required to learn functional Marathi by August 15 to enable better communication with passengers. He stated that drivers who do not comply with the directive by August 16 would face legal action and clarified that no further extension would be granted beyond the deadline.
Sarnaik was speaking during a meeting held at Mantralaya regarding Marathi language training programmes for taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers. Several officials and representatives associated with literary, educational and transport-related organisations were present during the meeting.
