Mumbai, Jan. 25 -- A Special Investigation Team probing a sensational kidnapping case linked to an alleged haul of demonetised Rs 2,000 currency notes worth Rs 400 crore has arrested five persons so far, while widening the investigation to examine the broader ramifications of the crime, police said here today.

The case involves the alleged looting and extortion linked to two vehicles transporting a large cache of Rs 2,000 denomination notes, which were withdrawn from circulation in May 2023 but continue to remain legal tender. Investigators believe the incident has interstate dimensions, prompting the Maharashtra Police to coordinate closely with police authorities in Karnataka and Goa.
