Mumbai, July 28 -- More than 100 tourists stranded at Zenith Waterfall near Khopoli in Raigad district of Maharashtra were rescued after a sudden surge in the water level triggered by heavy rainfall in the surrounding hills, officials said on Tuesday.
The tourists had entered the waterfall area around 7 a.m. when the weather was clear. However, heavy rain in the upper reaches around 10 a.m. caused the water level to rise rapidly, trapping visitors at two locations nearly 500 metres and one kilometre from the entrance.
Following an alert, personnel from the Khopoli Fire Brigade, local police and villagers from Vihari Thakurwadi launched a coordinated rescue operation.
