Chennai, June 12 -- As the sluice gates of the Mettur dam could not be opened for irrigation on the customary date of June 12 (today) due to poor storage level, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Friday unveiled a Rs 134.83 crore package for the benefit of farmers in the Cauvery delta districts to enable them to take up Kuruvai crop cultivation, besides uninterrupted thee phase power supply for 18 hours for irrigation.

Though Karnataka has been releasing surplus water, it has not released the monthly quantum of water to Tamil Nadu as mandated by the Final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal resulting in the lower storage level in the Stanley Reservoir.
