New Delhi, April 1 -- The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to amend the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, and formally accord Amaravati the status of the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The bill was approved after a brief discussion and passed through a voice vote.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in his Statement of Object and Reasons for the bill, said the 2014 Act initially designated Hyderabad as a common capital for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for up to ten years.
