New Delhi, Aug. 5 -- The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 by a voice vote amid continued uproar by Opposition members, replacing the colonial-era Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891 with a modern legal framework designed to accommodate India's increasingly digital banking ecosystem.

The legislation, moved by union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, seeks to update evidentiary provisions governing banking records by recognising electronic and digital records as legally admissible evidence in judicial proceedings, while retaining the long-standing principle that certified copies of bank records can be produced in courts instead of original documents.
