Bhubaneswar, Feb. 26 -- With about a month left for the Centre's target of a Naxal-free India, residents of Malkangiri district in Odisha have voluntarily dismantled Naxal Smaraks, monuments erected by Maoists as symbols of terror-police said on Thursday. The move reflects local exasperation over years of violence and disruptions to development caused by left-wing extremists.

"In what testifies to the district moving toward a Naxal-free status, locals have dismantled 20 memorials erected by cadres of the banned CPI (Maoist) and are working to remove the remaining structures," said police officials.
