Aizawl, July 5 -- Police have launched a search operation after a life convict serving a sentence for murder and rape escaped from the Central Jail at Tanhril on Friday while engagedin outdoor work within the prison premises.
The escaped prisoner has been identified as Zothanpuia, a native of Manipur. According to police sources, the incident occurred on July 3 at around 11.30 am.
Officials said 16 convicted prisoners had been assigned to clear vegetation and carry out maintenance work along the roadside inside the jail compound when Zothanpuia managedto flee from the work site. The escape was noticed soon afterwards, prompting a search byprison and police authorities.
