Bengaluru, May 24 -- Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa on Saturday warned that students wearing saffron shawls in state government schools would face legal action, asserting that such attire is not permitted under existing rules.

Addressing reporters here, the minister said the Congress government was clear on the hijab issue and had fulfilled its manifesto promise after coming to power.

"Students are not allowed to wear saffron shawls in any government school. If anyone comes wearing them, strict action will be taken as per the law," Bangarappa said ahead of the reopening of schools across Karnataka on June 1.
