Lucknow, May 17 -- A clash broke out between lawyers and policemen outside the Lucknow District Court on Sunday afternoon after authorities bulldozed illegal encroachments.

Lawyers pelted the police with stones in protest of the bulldozer action while police then retaliated by lathi-charge.

When the bulldozer action began at 9 AM, more than 100 lawyers and shopkeepers gathered and they sat on dharna and began shouting slogans. When the police tried to remove them, an argument broke out, followed by pushing and shoving. The police then used batons to remove the lawyers and shopkeepers.

The situation remains tense at the scene. Four Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), PAC personnel, and over 300 police personnel are deployed.
