Mumbai, May 16 -- The Archaeology Department should accord top priority to the preservation and conservation of Maharashtra's historic stepwells (Baravs) and prepare a comprehensive action plan for the same.

A special campaign should also be undertaken through district collectors to remove encroachments around these structures, directed Maharashtra's Minister for Cultural Affairs, Adv. Ashish Shelar.

A meeting of the Stepwell Conservation Committee constituted by the State Government was held today under the chairmanship of Minister Adv. Ashish Shelar.
