Kolkata, June 3 -- Kolkata Police have arrested a Trinamool Congress councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on charges of extortion, an officer said on Wednessday.
Arijit Das Thakur, the councillor of KMC Ward No. 106, was arrested by a police team late Tuesday.
An officer familiar with the case said Thakur was taken into custody following a complaint lodged by a group of individuals who stay in and around Garfa on the southern fringes of the city.
The arrest comes amid increasing scrutiny of elected representatives in the civic body. On Tuesday, Ward 36 councillor Sachin Singh, elected on a TMC ticket, was arrested by Muchipara Police Station in connection with an alleged extortion case, according to police sources.
