Kolkata, Sept. 8 -- In an alarming development for food lovers in the city, the food licences of 40 establishments, including restaurants and sweet shops, have been suspended by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) for violating food safety norms.

According to KMC Administrator Smita Pandey, the most critical issues found at these establishments were related to hygiene.

"In one of the establishments, we found cockroaches inside the fridge," Pandey said.

"Most of the hygiene issues were noticed in sweet shops," she added.

As informed by the Municipal Commissioner, during the week-long drive, food safety officers inspected 592 establishments, destroyed around 1,224 kg of food and collected 161 samples.
