Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 23 -- Kerala's first Skin Bank, established at the Government Medical College here, has commenced skin processing, marking a significant advancement in the state's capacity to treat severe burns and trauma victims.

The donor skin is preserved under specialised temperature-controlled conditions and undergoes a chemical processing cycle lasting about three weeks.

Once processed, it is grafted onto patients using advanced plastic surgery techniques. The procedure is crucial for patients who suffer extensive skin loss due to burns or accidents and plays a key role in saving lives.
