Thiruvananthapuram, March 1 -- In a major policy decision announced on Rare Disease Day, Kerala's Health Department has extended free access to the high-cost drug Risdiplam for patients diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) up to 25 years of age.

Health Minister Veena George said the benefit, which was previously available only to children up to 12 years, has now been broadened to include patients up to 25 years.

The expanded coverage applies to all individuals diagnosed with SMA Type 2 through genetic testing. The decision follows sustained representations from patients and support groups seeking long-term assistance.
