Thiruvananthapuram, May 18 -- The first Cabinet meeting of the newly sworn-in Kerala government led by Chief Minister VD Satheesan approved a series of sweeping welfare measures on Monday, including free bus travel for women in KSRTC buses from June 15, the creation of a dedicated department for senior citizens, and salary hikes for ASHA and Anganwadi workers.
The decisions, announced within hours of the new government assuming office, are being viewed as a decisive attempt by the UDF administration to begin implementing key promises made under its widely publicised "Indira Guarantee" campaign during the Assembly elections.
