Bengaluru, Aug. 1 -- In a major public health initiative aimed at tackling unhealthy eating habits among children, the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) has ordered a crackdown on the sale of junk food around educational institutions, issuing an advisory to discourage the sale of food products high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) within a 50-metre radius of schools and colleges across the state.
The advisory, issued on July 24 after inspections around 134 schools and colleges during July, also places school meal menus under scrutiny after officials found that food served to children in some institutions was excessively dependent on refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta and processed snack foods.
