Srinagar, Aug. 18 -- Police in Kargil district of the union Territory of Ladakh on Tuesday said they have registered an FIR over alleged derogatory remarks against late Iranian leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini after multiple complaints claimed that the comments had hurt the religious sentiments of people.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kargil Nitin Yadav said police had initially launched a preliminary inquiry under Section 173(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to determine whether the complaints established a prima facie case.He said several similar complaints were subsequently received and were merged into the same inquiry.
