Mumbai, Jan. 4 -- Karan Johar is preparing to step back behind the camera with a large-scale family drama, signalling a return to the genre that has long been synonymous with his filmmaking identity.

Industry chatter suggests that the filmmaker has finalised the script for his eighth directorial venture, a project said to inhabit the emotional and thematic universe of his landmark 2001 film "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham".

"After hitting the bulls eye with a romantic family comedy in the form of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Karan is returning to the family drama space with his next. Buzz is, it would be his biggest scale film till date, and Karan has brought in the New Year by locking the script of his next," a source told PINKVILLA.
