Nagpur, Feb. 22 -- A student from Maharashtra drowned, and another went missing after being swept away by strong waves at a beach in Chennai, officials said on Sunday.

According to sources, the incident occurred on Saturday when a group of 26 students visited Golden Beach, located under the jurisdiction of the Kanathur Police Station on East Coast Road in Chennai.

The students, who were in the city for an internship, had gone to the beach for sightseeing over the weekend.

Mayuri Chaudhari, an engineering student from Varathi village in Mohanadi taluka of Bhandara district, drowned after being pulled into the sea by high waves.

She had travelled to Chennai for an internship at Cognizant.
