Ranchi, Feb. 28 -- The Health and Family Welfare Department of the Jharkhand Government on Saturday formally launched a state-level Human Papillomavirus vaccination campaign to protect adolescent girls from cervical cancer.

Health Minister Irfan Ansari described the initiative as a step towards safeguarding the future of the state's daughters from cervical cancer, one of the leading cancers among women.

Citing data from the Indian Council of Medical Research under its National Cancer Registry Programme, he said more than 79,000 new cases and over 34,000 deaths related to cervical cancer were reported in India in 2022.

He said the figures underlined the seriousness of the disease and the need for preventive measures at an early age.
